Handapan Ella Falls
Handapan Ella is a charming waterfall located in the Rakwana area of the Ratnapura District, Sri Lanka. The falls descend from the Handapan Valley and are part of the headwaters of the Rakwana River. At about 23 meters in height, it is recognized for its moderate drop and scenic value.
The surroundings are lush and tropical, with dense forest cover and steep terrain. The valley from which the falls spring lies between the Kabaragala and Sinharaja mountain ranges, creating a biodiverse setting. Moisture from the mist and shaded rock faces supports ferns, mosses, and other understory plants, while the forest canopy provides habitat for numerous bird species and small mammals.
Visitors reaching Handapan Ella often hike from Rakwana, using a route that includes forest trails, rocky patches, and small stream crossings. The path is rugged and involves about 4 km of trekking over uneven ground. At the falls, people enjoy the view of the cascade, explore smaller adjacent streams, and photograph the natural beauty.
The best time to visit is shortly after rainy periods when water volume is stronger and the fall looks more dramatic. During drier months, flow is reduced, making it less impressive. Access is possible year-round, but footwear and caution are necessary when paths are wet and slippery. The site is accessed via roads toward Rakwana and then by local trails leading into the valley.
