北部州について

北部州はスリランカの9つの州の一つです。州は19世紀から存在していましたが、1987年に1978年スリランカ憲法の第13次改正により州議会が設立されるまで、法的地位はありませんでした。1988年から2006年の間、北部州は一時的に東部州と合併し、北東州となりました。州都はジャフナです。

北部州はスリランカ北部に位置し、インドからわずか35km（22マイル）の距離にあります。西はマンナール湾とポールク湾、北はポールク海峡、東はベンガル湾、南は東部、北中部、北西部の各州に囲まれています。州内には数多くのラグーンがあり、最大のものはジャフナ・ラグーン、ナンティ・カダル、チュンディックラム・ラグーン、ヴァダマラッチ・ラグーン、ウプ・アル・ラグーン、コッキライ・ラグーン、ナイ・アル・ラグーン、チャライ・ラグーンです。スリランカ周辺の島々のほとんどは、北部州の西側に位置しています。最大の島は、カイツ島、ネドゥンティヴ島、カライティヴ島、プングドゥティヴ島、マンダティヴ島です。

2007年の北部州の人口は1,311,776人でした。住民の大部分はスリランカ・タミル人で、スリランカ・ムーア人とシンハラ人は少数派です。スリランカ・タミル語は州内で人口の大部分が話す主要言語です。その他の言語として、人口の1%がシンハラ語を話しています。都市部では英語が広く話され、理解されています。
